There are certain places that you visit and it feels like an instant connection – you just know you’ll be back because you really love it. This is the way we felt seeing Copenhagen for the first time. For out of town visitors, one of the greatest things about going to Denmark is that nearly EVERYONE speaks English. It’s a small-ish country and the kids learn it from a very young age. It’s also very clean, safe, & modern.
After arrival on Friday night, Niels hosted us at their apartment for some drinks and Tapas and it was nice just catching up. Niels is fellow MIT Sloan grad ’11 and it was also nice to meet him gf Helene. We checked into our hotel late Friday night. Per the usual Faustino style, we didn’t go crazy trying to see very single landmark in our short weekend trip. In the morning we took a stroll through the city center and went through some of the newly opened Christmas Markets (some of the nicest Europe has to offer). We walked through Nyhavn which is the port area – it’s featured in many iconic images of Copenhagen along with the colorful townhouses and boats in the canal. The day we were there was foggy but still nice. Next up was a long walk along with the water to see the Little Mermaid statue. Short in stature, but big in terms of it’s infamy. We also saw the Royal Castle & spent some time in the dusk hours in Tivoli Garden which is absolutely magically lit up for Christmas time. Joseph was so excited to meet Santa Claus that he took a running leap into his arms – it was really cute. He told him he wanted the blue whistle for Christmas (which Santa DID deliver on…. kudos to Santa ;)) We ended the evening with a great dinner, during which Joey fell fast asleep just sitting in my lap….it was a long day. That was of course fine by us – as the adults enjoyed their wine and oysters in peace.
It was really a lovely trip and we hope we can come back in the nicer summer months as I’m sure it would be gorgeous.
