In August of 2017, we moved as a family to the city of Bremen, Germany located in the Northwestern party of the country. The hubs Miguel had a terrific opportunity to move here with his company as an “Expat” and to run one of the local business units. The changes are too many to name, but of course we were going from a very comfortable suburban Massachusetts life (big house, yard, nice community) to more of an urban type lifestyle (apartment, terrace, small-ish city). It was also a lifestyle shift for me, as I left my VP of Sales Job at a Marketing Brokerage company and am taking a Sabbatical currently. I mostly fill my days learning the German language (not an easy one!), serving on the PTA of Joseph’s new International School, and planning lots of trips
Why Make the Move?:
One of the biggest draws to living abroad was the ability to travel more – and we’re taking full advantage of it. Geographically, where we are located, it’s a great location in terms of ability to travel to other parts of Europe & beyond. So far we’ve been to the Netherlands, Portugal, Berlin, Copenhagen, Prague, and Bali —- in that order. We have upcoming trips planned to Switzerland for some skiing and are also hoping to get to Tokyo, Italy, Croatia, & UK in the near future. One of the biggest drawbacks of Bremen is definitely the weather. It won’t get as cold as Boston, or snow nearly as much, but it rains. A wicked lot.
What’s Bremen all about??:
The city of Bremen is charming in it’s own right. It’s not too large and it’s easy to navigate. It has the old world feel of other European cities with the small cobblestone streets, market square, & church… but it also has a modern feel, like a Starbucks & nice restaurants. At some point I’ll do a post with full pros/cons of living here, but at this point we’re still only a 6 months in so I’m trying to keep an open mind about all things Germany.
